i have to write a blog post

Posted in Uncategorized by c on January 31, 2011

if i don’t, i’ll miss one of my monthly goals (see previous post) which means i’ve already failed the effing FIRST month of 2011. so i have to write a blog post. (don’t ask me about the other goals)

but i have no idea what to write about, so maybe i’ll need to bust one of those write-about-writing-about-something things. or i can just go HAM with random topics that pass through the head.

eh, another time.

INSTEAD, i’ll talk about the weather. which is a little funny, given that the weather is the cliched fallback conversation when people have nothing to talk about. so i guess it’s fitting that when one has nothing to blog about, to blog about the weather. hey, i’m on a deadline here, i need that crutch. ANYWAY.

one of the things i’ve learned in new york is that weather is real. i’ll try to explain that: everyone who’s not from callie forn eye ay loves to talk about how the weather there is gorgeous and that it’s so awesome to have perfect weather 99% of the time. but when you’ve lived there all your life, that’s just the way it is. you NEVER think about the weather. never really need to check the weather report, never really need to plan for it, and almost never have to even look outside to see what it’s like. weather survives in an invisible existence.

and because you never have to think about the weather, it makes it sorta unreal. like how cancer is kinda unreal and most people don’t think about it, until it’s real and all you can think of. or how KFC’s double down is unreal and never imagined, until it’s the food item of 2010. clogged toilets. credit card bills. sprained ankles. various tech start ups. rotten fruit. and so on, you get the point.

to cut it: you always think about the weather in new york. which makes it currently face freezingly and in a few months sweat drippingly real.

2010 was the awesome

Posted in goals by c on January 4, 2011

I had two posts all of last year. That’s pretty pathetic. But! My lack of posts was not at all indicative of the kind of year i had because 2010 was a pretty great year.

Random highlights off the top of my head:

  • moved to new york
  • learned to love whiskey
  • grew out my hair
  • got a sweet gig that pays the bills

there’s more, of course, like stumbling upon a nude beach, cooking dinner for the geef, going to vegas, buying the ac unit, coming home and yaddas yaddas but i’ll have to flesh out those thoughts another day (which means, probably never).

anyway! As it’s the beginning of a new year and hope springs eternal, i might as well make a list of what i want to accomplish in 2011:

  • visit boston, dc, philly, seattle, miami and another city that i haven’t decided on
  • update this blog at least twice a month
  • take pictures outdoors at least twice a month
  • move all my pictures from flickr to picasa
  • go snowboarding
  • learn how to surf
  • learn how to dougie
  • read a book a month
  • beat 4 video games
  • swim again
  • play basketball again
  • join a bowling league
  • get good at pool & darts
  • bike around the city
  • lose 20 pounds

and for the more far-fetched goals:

  • go a week without the internet
  • learn wine
  • grow a beard
  • sleep on a regular schedule
  • start, er, finish starting a sports website
  • take a class about something i always found interesting
  • volunteer for two events/things/fuckitanything
  • be on time

i imagine both these lists to grow as i check items off the list. if i do all these things on the list, 2011 is going to be the awesome. lets get it

Quotes on JaMarcus Russell (pre-draft)

Posted in Uncategorized by c on May 7, 2010

Here’s a collection of quotes regarding recently-cut, once franchise savior, former number 1 pick JaMarcus Russell before the 2007 NFL Draft. Just awesome.

Todd McShay, ESPN:

“I can’t remember being in such awe of a quarterback in my decade of attending combines and pro days. Russell’s passing session was the most impressive of all the pro days I’ve been to. His footwork for such a big quarterback was surprising. He was nimble in his dropbacks, rolling out and throwing on the run. The ball just explodes out of his hands.”

Mel Kiper, ESPN:

“JaMarcus Russell is going to immediately energize that fanbase, that football team — on the practice field, in that locker room. Three years from now you could be looking at a guy that’s certainly one of the elite top five quarterbacks in this league. …You’re talking about a 2-3 year period once he’s under center. Look out because the skill level that he has is certainly John Elway-like.”

Jon Gruden:

“The workout Russell had was Star Wars. It was unbelievable.”

Mike Mayock, NFL Network:

“This year, I can’t get over how good and talented JaMarcus Russell is. It just blew me away. If I had the first, second, third, fourth, fifth pick in that draft, I would be tearing apart his personal life trying to figure out whether or not I could trust this kid with $10-million … From a physical skill set perspective, I’ve never seen a college quarterback with more ability than Russell. You put the tape on and it’s frightening. The only thing that’s going to keep [Russell] from being great is him. What it comes down to is you’ve got to figure out whether or not this kid wants to be the best quarterback in football. If he wants to be the best quarterback in football, he can be.”

I guess the moral of the story is that the desire to be great combined with hard work trumps pure talent and a bad work ethic every single time. I guess I can thank JaMarcus for serving as a reminder. If I do so choose to remember, of course.

new years

Posted in Uncategorized by c on January 2, 2010

it’s funny how as you grow older, the personal meaning of a holiday can change. think about what you thought of christmas or halloween growing up, a lot different now right? it’s definitely one of the signs of maturation that’s easiest to take, growing old without feeling bad. you no longer need christmas presents to feel fulfilled on christmas day, seeing friends and family is enough. halloween isn’t just all about the candy and costumes, well, scratch that, halloween is still about indulgence, just catered to a different age group.

the crazier phenomenon may be the new holidays that all of a sudden matter a heck of a lot more. like cinco de mayo or st patty’s day or memorial day. those are all now awesome ass holidays. obviously the introduction of alcohol makes you care more about mexican independence than you ever imagined before

but the holiday that has certainly jumped up in my personal rankings is new years. the combination of unbridled optimism, best friends, drinks, dress, and atmosphere is just ridiculous. there is no one day of the year where everyone, everywhere is looking forward to having as much fun as possible while being just so damn happy about it. it feels as if the whole world just bought a table in vegas and left all their baggage at home, partying on goodwill. as crazy and irresponsible as it sounds, it’s everyone focusing on midnight and taking as wild a ride as they can to get there. happiness doesn’t even begin to explain it.

and what’s crazy is that new years is undoubtedly the holiday that will change the most throughout our lifetimes. as a kid, it was obviously second banana to christmas. as a moody teenager, it’s an imbalanced holiday–too cool for family but not cool enough for the real world. and when we grow older with our own children, well there’s that responsibility thing.

so i guess what i want to say is, there’s only a finite amount of times to enjoy that perfect cocktail of partying and having fun–the way new years is currently constructed will not last forever. i guess this post is to remind me to always make time for new years–there’s nothing else like it, there’ll be nothing else like it. when december rolls around, find your friends and plan a party–it’s always worth it.

cheers, baby. happy new years. 2010.
